There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia casinos that lie just over the border from neighboring Thailand, in which gambling hall betting is not legal. Eight gambling halls are based in a relatively small space in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime area, a three to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. Ownership is assumed to be mostly Thai; although, investment sources are ambiguous. The borders are officially open from 0900 to 1700, and even though visas are apparently required to pass, there are methods around this, as is real of many borders.
The initial Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving only a single casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored bateau gambling den, features 150 one armed bandits and 60 gaming tables. The Naga casino is open all hours with 42 tables of mini-baccarat banque, four tables of vingt-et-un, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The 1st casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly opened. A total of one hundred and fifty slot machines and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slot machines and seventy tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and 96 table games, including eighty seven baccarat (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and sixty six of the familiar gaming tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, again a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 one armed bandits and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a comprehensive vacation and hotel building that highlights many conveniences accompanying the gambling den, which offers 10,000 square feet of one hundred and thirty slot machine games and eighty eight tables.
