There is an interesting background to the Cambodia gambling dens that reside just across the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, in which gambling den wagering is prohibited. Eight casinos are anchored in a relatively tiny location in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling halls is in an excellent spot, a three to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest wagering centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai laborers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The amazing income gained from the gambling halls ranges from $7.5 million to more than 12.5 million dollars, and there are a few restrictions requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; still, investment sources are vague. The borders are ceremoniously open from 0900 to 5:00 p.m., and even though visas are for all intents and purposes required to pass, there are methods around this, as is correct of most border crossings.
The initial Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving only 1 casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored bateau gambling den, contains 150 slot machines and 60 gaming tables. The Naga casino is open 24 hours with forty two tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of chemin de fer, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly opened. There are 150 slots and five tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four one armed bandits and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred slot machine games and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and 96 table games, including eighty seven punto banco (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 one armed bandits and sixty six of the familiar gaming tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, also in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a multinational vacation and hotel complex that highlights many conveniences accompanying the gambling hall, which contains 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 slot machines and 88 tables.
