Cambodia Gambling Halls
Friday, 8. January 2016
There is an interesting background to the Cambodia casinos that lie just across the dividing line from next door Thailand, in which gambling den betting is banned. Eight gambling halls are based in a relatively tiny area in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling dens is in a prime location, a 3 to four hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest gambling locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The astonishing income accrued from the gambling dens ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a couple of limitations requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mainly Thai; although, funding sources are vague. The borders are formally open from 09:00 to 5:00 p.m., and though visas are apparently required to cross, there are means around this, as is true of most borders.
The initial Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving only a single casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked ship gambling hall, contains 150 slots and sixty table games. The Naga river boat never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, 4 tables of 21, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The original gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly followed. There are one hundred and fifty slot machines and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slots and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slot machines and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slot machines and 96 gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat chemin de fer (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 one armed bandits and 66 of the common table games, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight casinos in Poipet, also in a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machines and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an international resort and hotel complex that features a number of amenities on top of the casino, which has 10,000 square feet of one hundred and thirty slot machines and eighty eight table games.
